As one of today’s biggest “it” models, Gigi Hadid faces social media trolls and internet hate on a daily basis–but she’s not one to keep quiet about it.
Hadid took to Twitter to confront people who have been incessantly body-shaming her, opening up about her struggle with Hashimoto’s disease which has caused her to suffer from fatigue and metabolism issues. In an interview by Blake Lively for Harper’s Bazaar, Gigi explains how the disease has affected her and how she deals with criticism.
“Nowadays, people are quick to say, ‘I used to love Gigi’s body, and now she just gave in.’ But I’m not skinny because I gave in to the industry. When I had a more athletic figure, I was proud of my body because I was an amazing volleyball player and horseback rider,” says Hadid. “But after discovering that I have Hashimoto’s [an autoimmune disease], I needed to eat healthy and work out. It was weird as a teenager, dealing with this when all of my friends could eat McDonald’s and it wouldn’t affect them.”
